Powering B.C.'s potential
We’re building a brighter, cleaner future together. By investing in renewable energy, supporting local innovation, and forging new partnerships, we’re not just meeting demand, we’re strengthening B.C.’s economy and driving sustainable growth. These investments create jobs, foster existing and emerging industries, and support long-term development to help our province thrive.
Watch how we're energizing B.C.'s tomorrow.
B.C.'s evolving landscape
As our province experiences extraordinary growth and shifting expectations, the demand for renewable electricity continues to rise, driven by:
- A rapidly expanding population
- Growing our economy and economic resiliency
- The transition to cleaner energy solutions in response to climate change
Balancing critical system investment and customer affordability is a challenge facing utilities across North America. To strike this balance, we must embrace new ways of working, make smart investment decisions for the long term, and enhance energy efficiency across the system.
Clean Power Action Plan
To drive economic growth and ensure long-term energy security, we'll expand access to made-in-B.C. renewable power—both now and for future generations. This guarantees British Columbians have reliable, sustainable energy when and where they need it.
In May 2025, BC Hydro and the Government of B.C. released the Clean Power Action Plan [PDF], outlining key initiatives to advance energy security, resilience, and clean power expansion to drive economic growth and climate action.
Key initiatives
- Second call for power: through the 2025 Call for Power we'll acquire additional clean energy in partnership with First Nations and independent power producers.
Increasing capacity: Issuing a Request for Expressions of Interest for capacity resources to explore the development of capacity projects and firm, baseload electricity projects to meet peak demand and back-up intermittent energy resources.
Advancing energy efficiency: Issuing a Request for Expressions of Interest for Power Smart partnerships to identify innovative clean-tech partners who can deliver cutting-edge, market-ready technologies to help people and businesses conserve energy.
Speeding up connections: Streamlining access to electricity for new and growing homes and businesses, and reducing costs under a new Distribution Extension Policy.
Actions we have underway
We're taking proactive steps to ensure our electricity supply keeps pace with demand today and in theyears ahead:
- 10-Year Capital Plan: Investing $36 billion to enhance community and regional electrical infrastructure, ensuring clean power is reliably delivered to new homes, businesses, and industries when and where it's needed.
- Site C hydroelectric project: Increasing our energy supply by 8%, enough to power 500,000 new homes.
- 2024 Call for Power: Supporting 10 new renewable energy projects that will add another 8% to our supply, serving 500,000 homes.
- Energy efficiency: Saving 2,000 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, enough to power 200,000 homes.
Through these initiatives, we're laying the foundation for a cleaner, more resilient energy future. You can help by taking part in programs that reward you for reducing your electricity use and by purchasing energy-efficient equipment for your home.
