Taylor boat launch (Peace River)

Boating on the Peace River

At the point where the Peace River flows through Taylor, in northeast B.C., it has passed all three of BC Hydro’s dams and generating stations on the river—W.A.C. Bennett and Peace Canyon dams in the Hudson’s Hope area, and Site C, southwest of Fort St. John. From the river’s former headwaters, now within Williston Reservoir, to Taylor is a distance of approximately 250 kilometres.

The Taylor boat launch, operated by BC Hydro, is located in Taylor at Peace Island Park and provides access for fishing and river boating. The District of Taylor operates the park and a campground adjacent to the boat launch.

At this location, the Peace River flows through the traditional territory of Treaty 8 First Nations.

Boating safety

All persons intending to operate a boat on the Peace River should always:

  • Obey all boater safety laws, which include carrying emergency equipment and wearing life jackets.
  • Carry extra shearpins and a spare propeller.
  • Inform others of your destination and when you are to return.
  • Observe all warning signs and stay well away from BC Hydro's dams and structures.

Extreme caution and an awareness and appreciation of hazards are essential for safe boating on the Peace River.

River levels can fluctuate over short periods due to hydroelectric operations. Boaters should watch for shallow areas, submerged hazards, and rapidly changing conditions.

Dam releases cause strong surface and underwater currents. For your own safety and the safety of others please remain well away from the upstream Site C dam and structures.
