Setting up a profile

A profile is an online resume that you use to apply for BC Hydro opportunities, now and in the future. It saves you time – once created, all you have to do is maintain and update your profile with work experience, education and contact information.

We encourage you to also keep an updated resume in your file and update it on a regular basis to ensure our recruitment team has access to the most up-to-date document.

When we post a position, our recruitment partners are also conducting searches in the system for potential candidates. If your profile is released, your information will be searchable. If we find, based on our searches, that you meet the minimum requirements for the position, we may invite you to apply.

If for some reason you wish not to be contacted with any invitations, you can lock your profile making your information unavailable when searches are performed.

If you're invited to apply for a position, you'll still need to submit an application in order to be considered.

The application wizard will automatically fill in any fields you've already completed in your profile.

To ensure you don't miss out on job postings, you can set up job alerts which will send you an email alerting you when a new position is posted that matches the criteria set out.

To set up job alerts:

  1. Log in to your account and select the Job Alerts link on the Overview page.
  2. Select Add and you'll see a set of search filters that allow you to set the criteria for your job alert.
  3. Once you're satisfied with your filters, select Save as Job Alert.
  4. Set how often you want to receive the alert from the drop-down menu. We recommend daily or weekly. You'll only receive the alert if you leave the Active box checked.
  5. Select Save, and you'll be returned to the Job Alerts page which will show a full list of your job alerts.

Applying for a job

You can apply by selecting the desired job posting and then select Apply. The application wizard will automatically fill in any fields you’ve already completed in your profile.

You won't be able to apply after the application deadline because the online application for that position will no longer be available.

While late applications will generally not be accepted, you can email our team to explain why you’re applying late.

It's best to answer as many of the online questions that you can. Fields with an * are mandatory and will need to be completed.

Completing all sections of your profile is optional. When the sections are completed, there can be more flexibility with how your information is reviewed by our recruiters. The preferred method is for you to attach your resume.

A cover letter is optional. However, we recommend including one to help us get to know you better.

To ensure you’re considered for all positions that interest you, we encourage you to apply separately to each job posting.

Yes, you can attach your resume when you create your profile and release your profile so that your resume will be viewable online.

To ensure you’re considered for positions that interest you, we recommend that you apply for specific job postings as they’re posted.

Due to the high volumes of applications we receive, we prefer that you use our online application tool where all applications are centralized in our database.

Your application will be reviewed by our team and if you're shortlisted or if more information is required from you, we'll contact you.

You'll receive an automatic notification once you've submitted your application.

To view the status, log in to your profile and select Applications under the Jobs and Applications category of the main page.

The status may be:

  • Draft: You haven't completed the application process.
  • In Process: Your application has been received and is being reviewed.
  • Rejected: The position has been filled by another applicant.
  • To Be Hired: You've been offered and accepted the position.

If you're shortlisted for an application, you'll be contacted by a BC Hydro recruitment partner using the email address or phone number you provide on your profile. Unfortunately, only those candidates who are shortlisted for a position will be contacted.

Select Applications to see an overview of all your applications and their statuses. Choose the one that you want to withdraw and select the Withdraw/Delete button.

Your application will be kept on file for three years from the date it is last reviewed.

Interviews

We'll only contact applicants that have been shortlisted. The timeline of the screening process for a job posting varies. It depends on a few things, including the number of applications that we receive and the availability of the interview panelists. If you're shortlisted, our team will do our best to reach out to you in a timely manner.

Research the organization

To prepare for an interview at BC Hydro, we recommend familiarizing yourself with who we are, what we do, and how we're planning for the future. You can also review our Service Plan and specific information relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Understand the role

Review the job description thoroughly and be ready to share how your skills and experiences align with its requirements.

Practice interview questions

Prepare answers for common interview questions, like:

  • "Tell me about yourself"
  • "Why do you want to work here?"
  • "What are your strengths and areas of development?"

Be ready to respond to behavioural questions by practicing the STAR Method (resources are available online). Find ways to connect your response to the job description and the organization’s values.

You can even do a mock interview with a friend or use online tools to simulate the interview experience. Record your answers and review them to improve your delivery and body language.

Prepare your questions

Have a few thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer about the role, team, or company culture.

  • Ensure your computer, camera, microphone, and internet connection are working properly.
  • Make sure you know how to use the video conferencing software, Microsoft Teams. Test it out and install any necessary updates.
  • Have a backup plan in case of technical issues, such as a phone number to call if the video connection fails.
  • Choose a quiet, well-lit space where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Ensure your background is clean and professional.
  • Dress as you would for an in-person interview. This helps you get into the right mindset and makes a good impression.
  • Research ahead of time the best route, travel time, parking availability, etc.
  • Choose professional attire that fits the company culture.
  • Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to show punctuality.
  • Be yourself and answer questions honestly.
  • Listen carefully to the questions and ask for clarification if needed.
  • Use specific examples from your experience to demonstrate your skills and accomplishments.
  • Be mindful of your body language and make eye contact with all interview members. Interviews are conducted by a panel of at least two people.

After the interview, take some time to reflect on the experience. Think about what went well and what you could improve for future interviews.
