Careers Frequently Asked Questions

Getting started

Why should I create a profile?

A profile is an online resume that you use to apply for BC Hydro opportunities, now and in the future. It saves you time – once created, all you have to do is maintain and update your profile with work experience, education and contact information.

How do I set up my username/password?

Your username and password are set when you register. If you forget your username and/or password when you access the log in page, you can select password forgotten, and enter either your username or email address to request a new password. A password needs to have a minimum of 8 characters.

If you do not receive the temporary password within 24 hours, check your junk mail folder to ensure the email message is not being filtered out. After entering the temporary password you will be prompted to change the password. Your new password must be at least eight characters (alpha/numeric) and is not case sensitive.

How do I set up job alerts?

To ensure you don't miss out on job bulletins, you can set-up job alerts which will send you an email alerting you when a new position is posted that matches the criteria set out.

To set up job alerts, log in to your account and click the Job Alerts link on the Overview page. Click the Add button and you will see a set of search filters that will allow you to set the criteria for your job alert.

Once you are satisfied with your filters, click Save as Job Alert button and ensure you select how often you want to receive the alert from the drop-down menu. It is recommended that you select "Daily" or "Weekly." You will only receive the alert if you leave the Active box checked. Click Save, and you will be returned to the Job Alerts page which will show a full list of your job alerts.

Applying for a position

How do I apply for a position?

Candidates can apply by selecting the desired posting, and submitting it through the Apply button. Note that the application wizard will automatically populate any fields you have already completed in your profile.

Can I apply for a position late or past the application deadline date?

Once a posting closes, you will not be able to view it online. Late applications will generally not be accepted.

Do I have to answer all online questions, even if the answers are in my resume?

Yes, questions that include a * are mandatory.

Do I really have to complete every section of My Profile if I'm attaching a resume?

When Recruitment Partners search the database to look for qualified candidates, the searches are based on the information that you provide in your profile (education level, work history, job preferences, and qualifications). If you only provide a limited amount of information, and then attach a resume, those specific searches may not identify you as a potential candidate.

Why should I release My Profile?

When we post a position, our Recruitment Partners are also conducting searches in the system for potential candidates. If your profile is released, your information will be searchable. If we find, based on our searches, that you meet the minimum requirements for the position, we may invite you to apply.

If for some reason you wish not to be contacted with any invitations, you can certainly lock your profile making your information unavailable when searches are performed.

Please note that if you are invited to apply for a position, you will still need to submit an application in order to be considered.

Is a cover letter required for all applications?

A cover letter is optional. However, it helps us to get to know you better.

If I apply for one position, will I be considered for other positions? Or do I need to apply for each job separately?

Yes, we encourage you to apply separately to all of the positions that interest you. However, our recruiters do conduct regular searches of our database as new opportunities arise and once you have released your profile, and we may invite you to apply.

Can I submit my resume without applying for a specific job?

Yes. By unlocking your profile, BC Hydro's recruitment partners can view your resume when they conduct candidate searches and may invite you to apply for postings. However, we still recommend that you apply for specific postings that arise which you are interested in.

How will I know you received my resume/application?

Shortly after you apply online, you will be sent a system generated message.

Can I contact the hiring manager or recruiter directly?

We prefer that all candidates use our online application tool so applications are available in our database. Once your application is received, our recruiters will review your application and be in touch with you if they have any questions about your background or experiences. The recruiters know our current and upcoming vacancies and search our database regularly. If they find a match between an opportunity and your skill set, they will be in touch with you.

How can I find out the status of my application?

You will be sent an automatic notification once you have submitted your application. To view the ongoing status, log in to your profile and select the Applications line under the Jobs & Applications category of the main page. The statuses will be shown as follows:

  • Draft: You have not completed the application process
  • In Process: Your application has been successfully received and is being reviewed.
  • Rejected: The position has been filled by another applicant
  • To Be Hired: You have been offered and accepted the position

If you are shortlisted for an application, you will be contacted by a BC Hydro recruitment partner using the email address or phone number you provide on your profile. Unfortunately, only those candidates who are shortlisted for a position will be contacted.

How can I withdraw my application?

When you select Applications, you get an overview of all your applications and what status they are in. Select the one that you want to withdraw and click on the Withdraw/Delete button.

How long will my resume/application be kept in your database?

Your application will be kept on file seven years from the date it is last reviewed.
