North Coast Transmission Line Phase 1: Prince George to Glenannan Transmission

Transmission lines running over a field and trees

We're working with our First Nations partners to build the North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL) Phase 1, which will add new 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines and associated infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Glenannan Substation near Fraser Lake. The project will support economic development and help meet the growing demand for clean electricity in the North Coast area.

What's new

Construction is starting in July 2026. Visit our construction activities and jobs and business opportunities pages to learn more about what work is taking place and related opportunities.

We’re bringing more clean, reliable electricity to the North Coast to foster economic growth and enable our customers to use clean electricity to power their operations and reduce greenhouse gases.

The current 500 kV transmission infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Skeena Substation near Terrace is reaching capacity and electricity from the Prince George to Terrace Capacitors project, which is currently under construction, is already fully subscribed. We're proposing to expand our transmission system to meet projected demand.

Through North Coast Transmission Line Phase 1, we're proposing to:

  • Build approximately 165 km of new, 500 kV transmission line from Williston Substation to Glenannan Substation
  • Expand Williston Substation to the east
  • Expand Glenannan Substation to the southwest
  • Expand Saranovich Capacitor Station to the west
  • Add fibre optic cables on new or existing transmission structures to improve communication between BC Hydro facilities.

North Coast Transmission Line Phase 2: Glenannan to Terrace Transmission covers the area from Glenannan Substation to Skeena Substation.

We're also proposing upgrades to the existing 500 kV lines from Williston Substation to Skeena Substation as well as new transmission infrastructure north of Terrace and in Prince Rupert. We're continuing discussion with current and potential customers to identify whether additional infrastructure will be required south or west of Terrace.

In 2023, we identified a proposed route corridor for Phase 1 that included options at the east and west ends of the route. Through discussions with our First Nations partners and input from stakeholders and other interested parties, the route shown in red below was selected for the project. This route is generally adjacent to our existing 500 kV line (shown in black) with two exceptions: at the east end, the route travels directly west from Williston Substation to Beaverly Substation, and at the west end the route follows our existing 230 kV line.

We began engaging with interested parties and communities along the Phase 1 route in 2023, during early project planning and we'll continue sharing updates as we move through construction.

In June, we held open houses in Prince George, Vanderhoof, Fraser Lake, and online, where we met with about 165 residents, property owners, business owners, and community leaders.

We thank everyone who took the time to engage with the project team and welcome ongoing questions and feedback.

We've also been meeting with local and regional governments and other interested parties to provide information on the project and receive feedback.

We're also working with our First Nations partners and hosted community meetings for First Nations involved in Phase 1 in June. This supports our commitment to co-design the environmental review and explore First Nations co-ownership of the North Coast Transmission Line transmission lines, along with other opportunities for Indigenous participation.

As Phase 1 and other proposed projects advance, we'll host more open houses, community meetings and other events so we can share updates and hear your feedback.
