North Coast Transmission Line Phase 1: Prince George to Glenannan Transmission

Transmission lines running over a field and trees

We're proposing to build the North Coast Transmission Line: Phase 1 to add new 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines and associated infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Glenannan Substation near Fraser Lake to meet increasing demand for clean electricity in the North Coast area

What's new

June 2025 – Open houses

Join us at an open house to learn about the North Coast Transmission Line.

At the open houses, we’ll share our work to identify leading routes for Phase 1 and Phase 2, and our other activities in the North Coast area.

Online open houses

Can’t make an in-person event? We’re having two online open houses: June 23 and 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Register by emailing us at projects@bchydro.com by June 22.

We look forward to discussing our work with you.

We’re bringing more clean, reliable electricity to the North Coast to foster economic growth and enable our customers to use clean electricity to power their operations and reduce greenhouse gases.

The current 500 kV transmission infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Skeena Substation near Terrace is reaching capacity and electricity from the Prince George to Terrace Capacitors project, which is currently under construction, is already fully subscribed. We're proposing to expand our transmission system to meet projected demand.

Through North Coast Transmission Line Phase 1: Prince George to Glenannan Transmission, we're proposing to:

  • Build approximately 170 km of new, 500 kV transmission line from Williston Substation to Glenannan Substation.
  • Expand Williston Substation to the east.
  • Expand Glenannan Substation to the southwest.
  • Expand Saranovich Capacitor Station to the west.
  • Add fibre optic cables on new or existing transmission structures.

North Coast Transmission Line  Phase 2: Glenannan to Terrace Transmission, covers the area from Glenannan Substation to Skeena Substation.

We’re also proposing upgrades to the existing 500 kV lines from Williston Substation to Skeena Substation as well as new transmission infrastructure north of Terrace and in Prince Rupert. We’re continuing discussion with current and potential customers to identify whether additional infrastructure will be required south or west of Terrace.

In 2023 we identified a proposed route corridor for Phase 1 that included options along two parts of the route as shown in the figure below.

Since then, we’ve evaluated the options by considering a number of factors as well as input from First Nations and stakeholders. We expect to present the leading route (i.e. the route for further study) for the western end at open houses in June 2025 and will continue studies on that route moving forward. We expect to identify the leading route for the eastern end later in the summer 2025.

Key dates Activity
Fall 2022 to mid-2025
  • Start desktop and field studies
  • Assess and select route and station locations
2023 to 2026
  • Complete studies and design work
  • Confirm workforce accommodation
  • Seek required regulatory approvals
  • Acquire property rights
Summer 2026
  • Start construction
Fall 2030
  • Target in-service date

We’re hosting open houses in June 2025 with a focus on the North Coast Transmission Line.

Engagement with our Indigenous partners is also underway, and this aligns with our commitment to co-design the environmental review and explore Indigenous co-ownership of the North Coast Transmission Line, as well other means of Indigenous participation.

As planning for the proposed projects progresses, we'll hold more open houses and other events or activities to enable us to discuss our plans with you.

Feel free to contact us at any time.
