Prince George to Glenannan Transmission Project

Transmission lines running over a field and trees

We're planning to develop new 500 kilovolt (kV) infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George and Glenannan Substation near Fraser Lake to meet increasing demands for clean electricity in northwest B.C. Learn more about our Prince George to Glenannan Transmission (PGGT) project below.

January 2024

We've completed flyovers of the PGGT project corridor and scouting to determine how we’d access the various routes should they be selected as the leading route option. We're working to identify "centre lines" – the area within the corridors where the transmission line would be placed. In March 2024, we'll undertake geotechnical work to confirm conditions along parts of the route.

Demand is growing from customers in the North Coast area for clean, reliable power to support electrifying their operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The current 500 kV transmission infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Skeena Substation near Terrace is reaching its capacity limit and electricity from the Prince George to Terrace Capacitors project, which is currently under construction, is already fully subscribed. We need to expand our transmission system to meet projected demand.

We're planning to add a new transmission line and associated infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Glenannan Substation near Fraser Lake:

  • New, approximately 170 km, 500 kV transmission line.
  • Expand Williston Substation to the east.
  • Potential expansion or upgrade of Glenannan Substation.
  • Expand Saranovich Capacitor Station.
  • Add fibre optic cables on new or existing transmission structures.

This project is part of the North Coast electrification initiative which also includes the Glenannan to Terrace Transmission (GTTT), Prince George to Terrace Capacitors and Northwest Substation Outage Mitigation projects, thermal upgrades to the existing 500 kV lines from Williston Substation to Skeena Substation, potential new transmission infrastructure north, south and west of Terrace and customer interconnection projects.

We've identified a route corridor shown in the figure below as well as options along two parts of the route as shown in the figures that follow:

In March 2024, we’re hosting virtual and in-person open houses in Prince George, Vanderhoof, and Fraser Lake. See the top of the page for details. We’ll post the presentation materials here afterwards.

Early engagement with our Indigenous partners is also underway, and this aligns with our commitment to co-design the environmental review and explore Indigenous co-ownership of the proposed new transmission lines, as well other means of Indigenous participation.

In May 2023 we held in-person open houses in Prince George, Vanderhoof and Fraser Lake as well as two virtual open houses to introduce the PGGT project route corridor and the route options at its east and west ends. We had a good turnout at the open houses and received feedback on the route and options which we're now considering in our assessments.

Feel free to contact us at any time to discuss or provide feedback about the PGGT project, including the route options under consideration.

We look forward to discussing our plans with you.
