First Nations partnership on the North Coast Transmission Line
First Nations, BC Hydro, and the Government of B.C. are working to advance a novel partnership model with First Nations along the North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL) corridor that would result in First Nations co-owning the transmission lines with BC Hydro.
This model reflects our commitment to meaningful reconciliation and long-term partnership, ensuring First Nations communities share in the planning, development and decision-making process for NCTL, as well as sharing in the associated economic benefits.
What partnership means
- Collaborative development of the environmental, cultural and social assessments and support for First Nations-led assessments to identify potential project impacts on First Nations interests and identify measures to avoid or minimize impacts
- Co-developing project conditions that address project-related social, economic, environmental and cultural impacts and supporting First Nations-led enhancement measures to leave a positive project legacy
- First Nation economic participation through procurement opportunities, training and employment
- A co-ownership opportunity for First Nations to become 50/50 equity partners and benefit through long-term equity returns
