Clayton Heights Substation

As the Surrey/Langley region continues to grow, we're making sure our power system grows with it. We're planning to build a new substation in Surrey to help us continue providing renewable and reliable power to homes and businesses.

Early design

After listening to early feedback from the community, we're sharing an early design concept. The design will evolve as the project progresses and we continue to receive feedback.

Updated substation name and timeline

The project has a new name, the Clayton Heights Substation, to better reflect where it will be built. It will support growing electricity demand in both Surrey and Langley. We now expect the first phase of construction to begin in 2029, at the earliest.

Planning is underway to build a new outdoor substation to serve rapidly growing communities in Surrey and Langley. The new substation will help power up to 35,000 more homes in the Clayton and Willoughby neighbourhoods.

Power lines to McLellan Substation in the south Cloverdale area will connect the new substation to the power grid.

With Surrey and Langley growing at a rapid pace, a new substation is needed to serve the region currently supported by McLellan Substation, which is located in the south Cloverdale area.

Once built, the new substation will help power up to 35,000 more homes in the Clayton and Willoughby areas, providing reliable power supply to the region.

We've purchased a property south of 76 Avenue between 194 and 196 streets. After looking at several other sites for the substation, this site was chosen due to its size, suitability and availability.

Early planning and design work for the new substation is underway. The exact size of the facility and the transmission routes have yet to be determined.

The substation is being designed to be built in phases.

The equipment shown in the northern area of the early design rendering represents the first phase of the project. The faded equipment shown in the southern/eastern areas represent a future second phase.

We're in the early stages of planning and design for the future substation. The design will evolve as we continue listening to feedback.

The first phase of construction isn't expected to begin until late 2029 at the earliest.

The timing of the future second phase has not been determined and will depend on future electricity demand in the area.

Communication and engagement

The substation will be a new addition to the neighbourhood, and we're committed to keeping area residents informed and engaging with stakeholders throughout the process.

We'll share substation design updates and transmission routes when they're available.

Clayton Heights Substation open house

We're planning to hold an open house on November 4, 2026 to share information about the project and answer your questions. More details about this event will be shared soon.
