The last time we talked to Sarah Wilson, she was praising a heat pump for delivering comfort and family harmony to her Langford, B.C. home during the 2025 summer school break.
So we just checked in to see how her second summer with a heat pump is going.
"I'm so obsessed with the heat pump that, if we ever move, we’re not going to a house that doesn’t have one," says Wilson. "I could never live without It again."
Wilson is big on telling family and friends to get a heat pump and reports that one of her neighbours just had one installed. And perhaps more will jump on the opportunity to get rebates of up to $4,000 on the purchase of one.
Through October 31, 2026, qualifying customers can get a $1,000 bonus rebate on top of the regular rebate. At the same time, you can enter to win one of three $5,000 prizes — in a contest open to all customers — with the credit going to your BC Hydro account.
The bonus rebate is part of our rebates for home renovations, which provide savings on a variety of home energy upgrades such as insulation, space heating, water heating systems and windows and doors. There are other bonus offers available for installing more than one eligible upgrade. The limited-time $1,000 bonus also applies to our existing condo and apartment heat pump rebates.

Like so many British Columbians facing hotter summers, Wilson and her family had leaned in on portable air conditioners to try to keep her home comfortable. But she hated the noise they made — she was using three in her home — and said that even as the evenings brought cooler air and allowed her to shut the AC off, heat trapped in her home rose to the upper floor bedrooms at night.
"We'd wake up in the middle of the night and discover that everything was hot again," she says. "We don’t have that problem anymore."
Wilson has looked at electricity costs over the past two summers and, even with the addition of two Level 2 chargers for the family's two electric vehicles, says she has seen no increase in her bills. In winter, the family found the heat pump delivered more even, less-dry heat, with fewer "cold and hot spots" around the home.
To be eligible for a rebate for replacing your electric heating system with a heat pump, you need to have a qualifying heat pump model installed by a member of the Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) to ensure it's done properly. The contractor will also assess your home's heating and cooling needs to determine the right size heat pump is selected.
Wilson said she had initially dreaded starting what she thought would be a complicated rebate application process. But with the help of the contractor, things went smoothly.
"We're really happy with the contractor," she said after her heat pump was installed in January of 2025. "They were friendly and responsive. We hired RedBlue, and they also helped take the complexity out of the application. It turned out to be quite easy."
