Peak Saver

Join Peak Saver to earn money back on your BC Hydro bill for using less electricity during brief times of high demand, called peak events. This program rewards you for being flexible when you use electricity, which helps us manage demand on our system.

Whether you prefer a hands-on challenge or to sit back and leave it to us, there are different options to shift, save and earn money during peak events.

Enroll your smart home devices, earn $50+

If you have an eligible smart thermostat, load controller, water heater, or networked electric vehicle (EV) charger, you can enroll them in our Peak Saver program.

Enrolling your devices in Peak Saver allows us to make slight adjustments during short periods of high electricity demand. You always maintain full override control of your devices.

The program helps you save energy and helps us manage demand during peak periods. You'll earn an enrollment bonus up to $500, plus ongoing seasonal rewards.

Take Peak Saver challenges to earn rewards

Participate in challenges during peak events—short periods when electricity use is expected to be highest, typically during very cold or hot weather.

When you shift or save enough electricity to meet the challenge's reduction target, you earn rewards and help reduce strain on your community's electrical system during peak times.

  1. Alert: You'll receive an email/text with the date and time of the next peak event, including the challenge reduction target and potential reward. For example, reduce by 20% to earn $3 off your bill.
  2. Shift or reduce: Shift high-energy activities to before or after the event and reduce your electricity use during the event.
  3. Reward: Earn a reward if you meet the challenge target.

You can participate in as many or as few challenges as you'd like, there's no penalty for not succeeding.

At the end of the program season, your total reward will be provided via a credit on your BC Hydro bill.

It's free to participate in Peak Saver challenges. To join the program, register online.
