A scalable and energy-efficient decarbonization strategy
District energy systems (DES) connect buildings to a shared thermal network, delivering heating and cooling from a centralized energy source.
Applicable to both new and retrofit developments, DES can deliver energy-efficient, peak savings, and scalable solutions that support building decarbonization. They are particularly well suited to dense urban environments, as well as neighbourhood and campus-scale environments.
The offer
We offer feasibility study funding to assess DES opportunities. This includes support for understanding your energy baseline, exploring technical solutions, and evaluating costs, risks, and long-term benefits.
Depending on your project’s readiness, you may begin with a feasibility study, or proceed directly to incentive funding.
When you're ready to build, we also provide capital funding to help offset the cost of equipment, system interconnections, and other eligible expenses. The more energy your project saves, the more funding you are eligible for.
Project types can include:
- Connecting new or existing buildings to a low-carbon district energy system
- Retrofitting, expanding, or modernizing an existing district energy plant
- New developments designed with centralized heating and cooling
How it works
- Connect with your Key Account Manager or an energy expert registered with the Alliance of Energy Professionals to discuss project scope and eligibility.
- Submit a proposal for feasibility study funding.
- Complete the study and apply for capital incentive funding.
- Implement the DES project with our support.
Eligibility
Funding may be available for municipalities, site developers, industrial sites, and DES operators.
Funding levels are based on your DES project's energy and demand-saving potential, evaluated against a baseline of electricity required for heating and cooling of individual buildings in equivalent conditions, up to a maximum of 100% of capital costs.
