Now's the time to add a heat pump to your home

Dave and Jaclyn gesturing towards a heat pump Thinking about getting a heat pump? For a limited time, you could get up to $1,000 in bonus rebates when you complete and pay for an eligible air source heat pump upgrade by October 31.

Bonus incentive, plus a chance to win a $5,000 BC Hydro account credit

Of the more than dozen high temperature records set in B.C. during our recent mid-July heat wave, two stood out: one more or less expected, the other sending meteorological historians — let’s call them "heatstorians" — digging deep into their records.

Sizzling highs out of the Fraser Canyon community of Lytton are nothing new, but when the mercury eclipsed 40°C for two straight days — including a record 41.2°C on July 22 — those were the two hottest days anywhere in Canada (so far) in 2026. Meanwhile on Vancouver Island, the temperature in Duncan hit 34.6°C, the highest for that day in 98 years.

That heat is uncomfortable at best, and dangerous at its worst. But while some of us tossed and turned through a sleepless night or two, many slept soundly in homes equipped with heat pumps that provide year-round home comfort — including air conditioning — reliably and efficiently.

"The cooling has had a material impact on our quality of life as a family," said Sarah Wilson, a mom and heat pump owner we talked to last year about the heat pump added to her home in the Vancouver Island community of Langford. "We're all sleeping better and getting along much better."

There's never been a better time to switch to a heat pump. Here's why.

Get a $1,000 bonus for adding a heat pump, and enter our contest

Install a heat pump to replace your current electric heating system by October 31, 2026, and get bonus rebates of up to $1,000. At the same time, you can enter to win one of three $5,000 prizes – in a contest open to all BC Hydro customers –  with the credit going to your BC Hydro account. Use that $5,000 towards your heat pump renovation project or to pay your BC Hydro bills.

The bonus rebate is part of our ongoing rebates for home renovations, which provide savings on a variety of home energy upgrades such as insulation, space heating, water heating systems and windows and doors. There are other bonus offers available for installing more than one eligible upgrade. The limited-time  $1,000 bonus also applies to our existing condo and apartment heat pump rebates.

Our home renovation rebates work hand-in-hand with FortisBC and our government-run CleanBC program. As program administrator for CleanBC home efficiency rebates, we’re here to help you upgrade your home’s efficiency for less.

Go all in on a variety of energy efficient upgrades to your home and you could earn up to $12,500 through our usual rebates. You could be eligible for up to $4,000 in rebates for replacing your current electric heating system with a heat pump, plus another $1,000 bonus offer available (while funding lasts) for heat pumps installed and invoiced between August 1 and October 31, 2026.

Remember, you'll need to get your heat pump installed through our rebate program or condo and apartment rebate program by October 31. And you can enter in a draw any time before the contest deadline — see details below for contest rules and deadlines — for a shot at one of three $5,000 prizes.

Three contest winners will be drawn from all contest applicants.

Why heat pumps are so popular in B.C.

Unlike a traditional furnace or baseboard heater, a heat pump moves heat instead of creating it, making it an exceptionally efficient way to keep your home comfortable year-round.

Depending on where you live in B.C., a high-efficiency heat pump can deliver roughly two to three times more heat energy than the electricity it uses over the course of a heating season. In summer, it doubles as a high-efficiency air conditioner, often using less electricity than older AC units while providing quieter, more consistent cooling.

A few factors and facts to consider when considering a heat pump:

  • They run on clean hydroelectricity so they'll reduce your household's greenhouse gas emissions if you switch from fossil fuel heating.
  • They're up to 300% more efficient than electric baseboard heaters.
  • They're up to 50% more efficient for cooling compared to a typical window A/C unit.
  • They could be less expensive to operate than a natural gas furnace.
