The easiest safety quizzes you'll ever take

bucket-truck-snow-vehicles.jpg Pop quiz: what do you do when you see a downed line, such as a tree on a power line? Stay back at least 10 metres (33 feet) and call 911.

You might ace these quizzes in under a minute, but the lessons could help keep you safe for life

When it comes to power lines, there are two numbers every British Columbian should know: 10 metres and 911.

That may sound like we're giving away the answers before you've even started, but there's a good reason. If you come across a downed, sagging, low-hanging or damaged power line, there are only two things you need to remember: stay back at least 10 metres (33 feet) – that’s about the length of a bus – and call 911.

Why 10 metres? When a power line comes into contact with the ground, electricity can spread through the surrounding area. Think of it like ripples moving across a pond. The closer you are to the point of contact, the greater the danger. Staying at least 10 metres away helps keep you out of harm's way.

And why 911? Any downed or damaged power line should be treated as an emergency. Even if a line isn't sparking, crackling or making a sound, always assume it's energized and dangerous. Calling 911 helps ensure the situation is reported and responders can secure the area.

One more thing: it's not just the line itself that's a hazard. Trees, fences, vehicles and other objects touching a power line can also become energized. That's why it's important to stay well back and keep others away too.
