VANCOUVER: BC Hydro is on the verge of a major milestone: 100,000 British Columbians committed to cutting their electricity use by 10 per cent over the next year. Together, that is up to $10 million in rewards for BC Hydro customers, if successful.
The countdown to 100K is officially on, and now it is a shared effort across B.C. regions. With 86,762 sign-ups to date, the Lower Mainland is in the lead with 54,488 sign-ups, Vancouver Island is second at 19,468 sign-ups, the Southern Interior and Northern B.C. are at third and fourth place at 8,245 and 4,561 respectively.
Time is running out, so join the Team Power Smart Reduction Challenge by January 31 and earn double the reward, $100 instead of $50, when you complete the challenge of reducing electricity consumption by 10 per cent over 365 days.
That is on top of the savings you will see on your annual bill, which could also be about $100 if you cut your electricity use by 10 per cent for the average account. For many condo or apartment dwellers, that is like covering a month or more of electricity costs.
