VANCOUVER: BC Hydro set another new all-time summer peak electricity demand record on Wednesday, breaking the all-time high established the previous day as hot weather drove air conditioning use across the province.
Preliminary data shows peak hourly electricity demand, the hour customers use the most electricity, reached 8,870 megawatts on Wednesday evening between 5 and 6 p.m., surpassing the new summer record of 8,715 megawatts set on Tuesday evening during the same time period. Tuesday's record had exceeded the previous summer peak of 8,652 megawatts, which was set in August 2025.
Despite the record-setting demand, BC Hydro's hydroelectric system has continued to perform reliably, with sufficient capacity available to meet customer needs. BC Hydro continues to monitor system conditions closely as hot weather persists.
BC Hydro is offering limited time retail rebates to help customers until August 21, 2026, including:
- $50 off select ENERGY STAR® window air conditioners and high-efficiency portable air conditioners.
- $30 off select ENERGY STAR® air purifiers.
