VANCOUVER: BC Hydro set a new all-time summer peak electricity demand record on Tuesday evening between 5 and 6 p.m. as hot weather increased air conditioning use across the province.
Preliminary data shows peak hourly electricity demand – the hour customers use the most electricity reached 8,715 megawatts, surpassing the previous summer record of 8,652 megawatts set in August 2025. BC Hydro continues to monitor system conditions closely and expects to potentially break another record today as hot weather persists.
The new record reflects a broader shift in how British Columbians use electricity during the summer. Nearly 70 per cent of households now have some form of air conditioning, making cooling a significant driver of electricity demand during hot weather.
Despite the record-setting demand, BC Hydro's hydroelectric system performed reliably, with sufficient capacity available to meet customer needs. While the heat wave is driving summer electricity demand to new heights, demand remains well below the levels the system manages during the coldest winter weather.
Tips to stay comfortable, and save energy and money
BC Hydro reminds customers trying to stay cool while managing energy costs to:
- Take advantage of rebates: BC Hydro is offering limited time retail rebates until August 21, 2026, including:
- $50 off select ENERGY STAR® window air conditioners and high-efficiency portable air conditioners.
- $30 off select ENERGY STAR® air purifiers.
- Use fans: Fans cost very little to run and can help reduce the need for air conditioning. Running one for nine hours a day costs about $7 over the summer.
- Block out heat: Close blinds and drapes to reduce 60 per cent of heat entering your home.
- Keep cool air in: Shut windows and doors when it is hotter outside than inside.
- Maintain your equipment: Replace air conditioning and air purifier filters regularly to improve performance.
