VANCOUVER: With household budgets top of mind and storm season underway, BC Hydro is launching a new mobile app that helps customers save money, earn rewards and stay connected.
Available free for Apple and Android devices, the new BC Hydro mobile app brings together bill management, electricity-use insights, Power Smart rewards and outage updates in one convenient place. Customers can better understand where they're using energy, discover new ways to save and get the information they need most, wherever they go – with more features and Power Smart opportunities to come.
"This is the most personalized way yet for customers to connect with BC Hydro," said Charlotte Mitha, President and CEO of BC Hydro. "The app helps customers turn insights into action, whether that's lowering energy use, earning rewards through Power Smart programs or staying informed when the power goes out. It's about putting more control and convenience directly into our customers' hands."
Save energy. Earn rewards.
The app makes it easier than ever for eligible customers to participate in BC Hydro's Power Smart programs and rewards. More than 100,000 customers took part in a Team Power Smart challenge last year, with successful participants earning up to $100 in direct rewards in addition to savings on their electricity bills.
Customers can join Team Power Smart and Peak Saver, participate in challenges, track progress and access available rewards by reducing electricity use during periods of peak demand. Peak Saver participants can see when events are coming, follow a live countdown during events and easily access their event history. The app provides notifications about new opportunities to participate, helping customers find more ways to save energy and earn rewards throughout the year, including through exclusive weekly contests.
Know what's happening when the power goes out
During major storms, hundreds of thousands of customers visit BC Hydro's outage map for updates. The app now provides outage and restoration information tailored specifically to a customer's home.
Customers can view outage information, including the status of crews working to restore power. They can also view outages occurring elsewhere in the province through BC Hydro's outage map.
More insight into your energy use. More control over your bill.
Nearly two million customers already manage their accounts online, and the new app makes it even easier to access billing information, track electricity use and stay informed wherever they are. Customers can seamlessly switch between multiple accounts, including more than one home or a vacation property, all from a single app.
Customers can view electricity use by billing period, day, month or year, compare consumption over time and track usage in either kilowatt-hours or dollars. The app also provides quick access to account balances, pre-authorized payment amounts and PDF bills for up to three years.
By making energy information easier to access and understand, the app helps customers connect their everyday habits with their electricity use and costs.
Built for convenience today, with more to come
Small changes can add up. The new app helps customers spot opportunities to save energy, earn rewards and keep more money in their pockets – and this is just the start. BC Hydro plans to continue adding features and Power Smart-related functions later this year and into the future, giving customers even more ways to manage their energy use from their phone.
