Coaxing a bear cub off a power pole in Port Hardy

A bear cub climbed up a 50-foot power pole on Highway 19 near Port Hardy on Saturday and needed to be coaxed off the pole and away from a 25,000-volt electricity line by BC Hydro power line technicians.

The bear cub was spotted on the pole by a driver passing by. The crews on-site asked BC Hydro's control centre to "de-energize" the line to allow for the safe removal of the cub. This resulted in a 10-minute power outage to about 450 customers near Port Hardy.

The bear seemed unharmed and ran into the nearby bushes after coming down.
