Weekend power outage caused by metal theft attempt

An attempted theft of copper wire from a high voltage power line caused a power outage to about 700 BC Hydro customers in downtown Vancouver early Sunday morning.

Thieves attempted to cut into a 12,000-volt power line. BC Hydro crews restored power to most customers within hours. They worked throughout the day on Sunday to replace the power cable and restore power to the remaining 66 customers. Power was restored to all customers by about 3:30 p.m.

BC Hydro reminds the public that live power lines are extremely dangerous and urges the public to call the police if they see suspicious activity around power lines.
