Free electronics recycling in Chilliwack, February 3-14

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack residents looking to dispose of under-used or unwanted televisions and other electronics safely and responsibly can take advantage of free collection and recycling thanks to a partnership between BC Hydro Power Smart, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, BCHL and Return-It Electronics.

From Feb. 3 to Feb. 14, customers can call 1 866 919 5865 to schedule free pick up from their home. Alternatively, customers can drop off their electronics at Prospera Centre on Feb. 14, before the Chilliwack Chiefs game, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The items dropped off will be delivered to local Return-It Electronics depots, where electronics can be dropped off year-round for free recycling. A wide variety of items including televisions, computers and printers are accepted.

British Columbians are using more electronics at home than ever before and most home electronics are often left plugged-in even if they are not used. This "standby" power use can account for up to 10 per cent of a home’s overall electricity demand.

Electronics are expected to represent 15 to 20 per cent of home energy use in B.C. this year. More than 20 per cent of BC Hydro customers have three or more televisions in their home.
