Mobile substation powers Britannia Beach

A BC Hydro mobile substation powers the Britannia Beach community in the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, ensuring continuity of electricity service to the entire community. BC Hydro recently completed maintenance to the high voltage transformer at the Britannia Substation. The mobile unit was brought in to maintain service in the area while the repairs were made.

The mobile substation receives power at 60,000 volts from the transmission line overhead, and then feeds the load at 25,000 volts to the underground distribution system. The grounded fence surrounding the mobile unit protects the public from the high voltage equipment; and security personnel provide additional public safety support. The site for the mobile substation was selected for proximity to the transmission and the distribution electric systems.

BC Hydro will be transferring service from the mobile unit back to the Britannia Substation on December 20.
