Customers asked to decline telemarketing offer for power saving devices

A U.S. news station debunks claims made by distributors of a plug-in 'energy-saving' device in December, 2007.

VANCOUVER – BC Hydro's customer service department has received a number of calls from customers around the province advising that some telemarketers are misrepresenting themselves as BC Hydro employees in an attempt to sell energy-saving devices.

In some instances, telemarketers also incorrectly claimed they were in possession of the customer's power consumption information.

BC Hydro would like to clarify they do not endorse these "Hydro Power Savers" and reassure customers that BC Hydro's individual power consumption information is strictly confidential and is not shared with third parties.

Customers who have been contacted by telemarketers about this device are encouraged not to enter into any agreement for purchase without careful prior investigation.

For those customers who would like more information on how to reduce energy use around homes and businesses, please visit the Power Smart section of bchydro.com.
