Brookswood Substation project
The Langley/Surrey region is one of Canada's fastest-growing communities, and we're making sure our energy system grows with it. To ensure we continue delivering reliable power to homes and businesses, we're planning to build a new substation in the Brookswood area of Langley.

Early design
We've developed an early design concept for the future substation. The design is not final and will continue to evolve as planning progresses. The facility will be built in phases, with the first phase being built on the south side of the property.
The substation will be connected to BC Hydro's electrical network by two transmission lines. We expect the transmission circuits to be underground, however the routes have not yet been determined.
Updated timeline
We now expect the first phase of construction to begin in late 2028, at the earliest.
We need to build a new outdoor substation to supply power to rapidly growing communities like Brookswood in Langley and Campbell Heights in Surrey.
To connect the new substation to the existing network, we'll also need to build a transmission connection linking it to McLellan Substation in the south Cloverdale area of Surrey.
Langley and Surrey are growing rapidly, and a new substation is needed to supply power to neighbourhoods like Brookswood in Langley and Campbell Heights in Surrey.
Once complete, the new substation will help power up to 35,000 more homes in the area.
We've purchased a property from the Township of Langley, located north of the intersection at 197A Street and 30 Avenue. We looked at several other sites for the substation and this site was chosen due to its availability, size and suitability.
We've developed an early design concept for the future substation. The design is not final and will continue to evolve as planning progresses. We'll continue to consider community feedback as we refine the design.
The equipment shown in the southern area represents the first phase of the project. The additional equipment shown in the northern area represents a future second phase.

The substation will be connected to BC Hydro's electrical network by two transmission lines. At this stage, we expect the transmission circuits to be underground, however the routes have not yet been determined.
An independent assessment by a Registered Professional Forester found that if the trees adjacent to the proposed substation are retained, they could become unstable and fall during severe wind events. To reduce the risk to nearby homes and the future substation, all trees surrounding the substation will need to be removed. The exact boundary of the tree removal will be determined as the design progresses and will be shared with the community.
We understand that tree removal may be a significant change for the neighbourhood and an important concern for nearby residents. We're committed to reducing visual impacts where practicable, including tree planting, landscaping, and fencing as part of the project design.
We're in the early stages of the substation project, with planning and design underway.
Construction for the first phase of the substation is not expected to begin until late 2028, at the earliest.
The timing of the future second phase has not been determined and will depend on future electricity demand in the area. Based on our current forecast, this is not expected within the next 10 years.
We understand the new substation will bring changes to the area. We're committed to keeping area residents and stakeholders informed throughout the process.
We'll share substation design updates and transmission routes when they're available.
We'll hold a community open house in the coming months. We'll share more details about this event when available.
