BC Hydro submarine cables update

VANCOUVER – BC Hydro continues to make significant progress in repairing submarine electricity cables serving Vancouver Island that were damaged over the summer.

In July, BC Hydro detected oil leaks and buckling in the above-ground portions of some of its submarine cables, which extend from the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver Island. Initial repairs are expected to be completed this month. However, additional work will likely be required over the next two to four years.

BC Hydro expects to take the cables out of service for short periods of time to ensure that the repairs can be completed safely. BC Hydro customers on Vancouver Island will not be impacted by any intermittent cable outages.

BC Hydro is planning on working with Capital Power to determine if the Island Generation facility can provide additional back-up capacity and supply in the short-term while the repairs are made.

No final decisions have been made, and BC Hydro will continue to work with Capital Power and the community to address any concerns.
