Woodfibre LNG Interconnection Project: Stage 1

View of Stawamus Chief and Howe-Sound

We've been asked by Woodfibre LNG Limited Partnership (Woodfibre LNG) to supply power to their liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and export facility near Squamish.

We're connecting the Woodfibre LNG facility in two stages. The first stage is an initial connection supplying the power needed for the facility to begin operations. In the second stage, we'll build an additional power line to ensure the facility has reliable access to clean and renewable power.

This page details the project's first stage only. To learn more about the second stage, visit Woodfibre LNG Interconnection Stage 2.

What's new

Since re-initiating the project, we've:

  • Identified a temporary location for telecommunications equipment where we plan to co-locate on an existing tower near Watts Point.
  • Determined a proposed permanent site for telecommunications equipment above Highway 99 near Squamish.

Stage 1 of this project will supply the power needed for Woodfibre's facility to begin operations. This infrastructure will remain in place after Stage 2 is in service.

This interconnection will involve connecting Woodfibre's facility to an existing transmission line. We'll also create a telecommunications link connecting Cheekye Substation to the Woodfibre LNG facility, which will be implemented in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Co-locate infrastructure on an existing telecommunications tower at Watts Point on a temporary basis of approximately three to five years.
  • Phase 2: Install telecommunications infrastructure at a new permanent site and decommission the telecommunications equipment at Watts Point.

We'll also install telecommunications equipment on existing BC Hydro towers at Alice Lake and Cheekye Substation.

By ensuring that Woodfibre LNG's facility has reliable access to clean and renewable power, this project supports B.C.'s economic growth and climate action goals, helping to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

We're undertaking a variety of studies including:

  • Environmental (fisheries, vegetation, wildlife, terrain, etc.)
  • Archaeological (as required)
  • Geotechnical (as required)

Like all industrial customers, Woodfibre LNG will follow our interconnection process. Customers provide financial contributions according to the B.C. Electric Tariff to pay for their connection to the BC Hydro grid.

We anticipate that construction on Phase 1 of this project will start in spring 2026 for a targeted in-service of October 2026.

The earliest construction start for Phase 2 is spring 2027 for a targeted in-service of summer 2027.

We're committed to open, transparent communications with First Nations, local governments, the public, and anyone affected by construction.

We'll provide updates as we plan, design, and construct Stage 1 of the project.
