BC Hydro is required to submit an annual report to the National Pollutant Release Inventory which tracks pollution in Canada, including those resulting from air emissions. Requirements for reporting include: Criteria Air Aontaminants which include Total Particulate Matter (TPM), Particulate Matter less than or equal to 10 Microns (PM10), Particulate Matter less than or equal to 2.5 Microns (PM2.5), Sulphur Oxides (SOx), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Ammonia (NH3); Heavy Metals (HMs): Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Mercury (Hg); and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs): Dioxins and Furans (DF), Benzo[a]pyrene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene, Benzo[k]fluoranthene, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, and Hexachlorobenzene (HCB). These compounds noted as N/A above are not part of our NPRI reporting for diesel generation. Emissions that do not exceed the NPRI thresholds are not reported.

For more information, visit Environment Canada – Air Pollutant Emissions website.

The results above are based on calendar year 2010 and include BC Hydro's two major thermal generating station and a number of diesel plants located in remote areas of the province. Prince Rupert Generating Station is a small plant which is used for back-up generation only; and our Keogh facility on northern Vancouver Island was decommission in February 2003.

BC Hydro produces most of its electricity through hydro generation (over 90 per cent).
