VANCOUVER: BC Hydro has submitted its 2025 Integrated Resource Plan to the BC Utilities Commission, outlining a 20-year strategy to meet rising demand for clean electricity and fuel economic growth across the province.
With electricity demand projected to grow by about 15 per cent by 2030, driven by population growth, industrial expansion, and the shift to clean energy, the plan lays out a roadmap to support residential, commercial and industrial customers. Key initiatives include enhanced energy efficiency programs, customer solar offers, and the 2025 Call for Power, which is expected to add 5,000 gigawatt hours – or enough to power 500,000 homes – of clean or renewable electricity by 2034.
As outlined in the Integrated Resource Plan, major infrastructure investments will play a central role in meeting future electricity demand and supporting economic growth. BC Hydro plans to add a sixth generating unit at the Revelstoke Dam, increasing capacity by 500 megawatts. At the G.M. Shrum Generating Station, upgrades to Units 1 to 5 will add another 100 megawatts of clean energy capacity. These projects, along with the development of the North Coast Transmission Line, will enhance system reliability, support community growth and industrial expansion, and unlock new opportunities in B.C.
The Integrated Resource Plan is designed to be flexible and resilient, preparing for a range of future scenarios shaped by factors like geopolitical shifts, trade dynamics, technological innovation, climate variability, and changing economic conditions. It reflects extensive input from the public and First Nations, and aligns with provincial priorities including reconciliation, climate action and electrification.
