BC Hydro opens two EV fast charging hubs in Delta
DELTA: BC Hydro opened a new EV fast charging hub in Delta on December 12 – the second hub it has added in the city over the past eight weeks. Together, these two new hubs will add 18 new charging ports in Delta.
"These new electric vehicle charge hubs in Delta continue our work with BC Hydro and other partners to make cleaner options more accessible and affordable for all British Columbians," said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions.
In collaboration with the City of Delta, BC Hydro completed its first hub at the Sungod Recreation Centre (7815 112 St.) on October 7. This location has four 180-kilowatt dual port chargers, which can add up to 180 kilometres of driving to an average EV in about 10 minutes. On December 12, it opened a second hub at Delta's Sport Development Centre (4680 Clarence Taylor Cres.) with four 180-kilowatt chargers and two 100-kilowatt chargers.
"A growing number of Delta residents are making the switch to an electric vehicle from one powered by fossil fuels," said Ravi Kahlon, MLA for Delta North. "That's why we are working to expand B.C.'s public charging infrastructure and provide more options for EV drivers to power their vehicles with renewable and affordable electricity."
In addition to being faster, the 180-kilowatt units also offer dual charging or power sharing, which allows two customers to use the same charger. For example, a 180-kilowatt charger can adjust to provide two 90-kilowatt charging ports.
"We are grateful for this partnership with BC Hydro to support the growing number of zero-emission vehicles in our community," said Delta Mayor George V. Harvie. "By offering EV chargers at our facilities, we are providing a convenient and efficient option for electric vehicle owners, further supporting the adoption of EV technology in our area. The availability of more EV fast chargers in Delta is a critical step towards fulfilling our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future."
Some of the units are also equipped with NACS (North American Charging Standard) connectors to support charging a variety of different electric vehicle models. Both locations feature a curbless design, cable management systems and a lower display on the new chargers for better accessibility.
"British Columbians are embracing electric vehicles faster than any other jurisdiction in Canada and that's why we are continuing to make investments for growth within our current system and building out our fast charging network across B.C.," says Chris O'Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro. "These new chargers in Delta will help support EV adoption and reduce range anxiety throughout B.C."
As BC Hydro continues to build its fast charging network, it plans to focus on building more hub sites with multiple chargers along highway corridors to provide a faster and more convenient experience for its customers. Future charge hubs are planned for Prince George, Colwood and Langley.
The adoption of electric vehicles across British Columbia has increased significantly. There are now more than 170,000 EVs on the road in B.C., and BC Hydro predicts there will be between 700,000 and 900,000 EVs within the next 10 years.
BC Hydro's provincewide fast charging network currently includes 404 charging ports at 131 sites in communities throughout B.C. BC Hydro is looking to double the number of charging ports in its network to 800 by Spring 2026. The chargers are funded in a partnership with the Province of B.C. and Natural Resources Canada.
