Turn daylight savings into energy savings

Vancouver, B.C. – Early this Sunday clocks spring forward, and it’s time to put that extra hour of sunlight and longer days to work by springing into energy savings:

  • As temperatures warm up, turn down your thermostat. Adjust your programmable thermostat to daylight savings time.
  • As the days get warmer, hang laundry outside to dry on sunny days. After the refrigerator, a clothes dryer typically uses the most electricity of any appliance in a home.
  • Harness the sun's natural energy with simple solar-powered lights to illuminate landscapes and paths (and yes solar-powered lights will still charge in overcast skies).
  • Install lighting controls such as dimmers, timers and motion sensors.

Lighting:

The next best thing to daylight is energy-efficient lighting.

There is a greater availability than ever of ENERGY STAR LED products in stores across British Columbia. BC Hydro Power Smart is partnering with over 300 retail outlets across the province to offer instant rebates on energy-efficient lighting.*

Rebates run from March 1 to April 30 and include:

  • Up to $10 off select ENERGY STAR LED bulbs;
  • Up to $15 off select ENERGY STAR fixtures;
  • $3 -$6 off select ENERGY STAR CFL specialty bulbs.

*Products, stock and pricing vary by retailer.

ENERGY STAR LEDs are growing in popularity as they:

  • Use at least 75 per cent less energy than incandescent lighting;
  • Can last about 20 years (25,000 hours) based on average household use;
  • Come on quickly, are durable and are good for dimming;
  • Are available in traditional bulb shapes and fit easily into many existing fixtures.

Consumers should always look for the ENERGY STAR label when purchasing lighting products as they have been tested to meet strict energy efficiency, operating, and reliability criteria.
