Why do B.C. homes have the fewest second fridges in Canada?
Vancouver, BC – British Columbians have fewer second refrigerators than anywhere else in Canada, which is great because a second fridge is one of the highest energy users in a home.
The question though is, why is B.C. so energy efficient with our fridges? Is it because:
A. B.C.’s sushi is so tasty there are rarely any leftovers to worry about, and non-fat lattes don’t taste as good the next morning?
B. We’re known for being the fittest province with the lowest obesity rates in Canada?
C. B.C. residents are more energy conscious thanks in part to Power Smart programs and BC Hydro’s Fridge Buy-Back program?
And yes, the right answer is “C”. B.C. residents are energy conscious as evidenced by the success of BC Hydro’s Fridge Buy-Back program which has picked up and recycled over 275,000 fridges since the program started in 2002. This has resulted in over 230 gigawatt hours of energy savings – enough to power over 20,000 homes a year.
So what do you do to keep British Columbians motivated to stick to just one fridge and keep saving energy? Keep reminding them to keep up the good work.
From Sept. 29 to Oct. 4, shoppers at Sears’ downtown Vancouver store will notice a cool addition at the Robson Street entrance: a 1980’s fridge with a 20 foot long plug and plug-in decal. The fridge will be moved to Commercial Skytrain station on Oct. 5 until Oct. 9.
It’s the first taste of BC Hydro’s Power Smart month activities which promote not only energy-efficient appliances but also general energy conservation throughout October.
