Transformers arrive at BC Hydro's Revelstoke Generating Station

REVELSTOKE – BC Hydro recently received three large generator transformers, each the size of a school bus, at the Revelstoke Generating Station.

The transformers were the last of several oversized deliveries for the Revelstoke Unit 5 Project this year that also included transport of the thrust bracket and turbine shaft. These deliveries follow the successful delivery of a 188-tonne turbine last summer. It was one of the largest transports to ever travel B.C.'s highways.

"Now that we have received all of the main components, project contractors will complete the assembly of the generating unit, transformers and other electrical equipment," said Jennifer Walker-Larsen, BC Hydro's Stakeholder Engagement advisor. "Once the assembly is complete, BC Hydro will start a test phase of the generating unit and related equipment."

The three transformers, each weighing 108 tonnes, were manufactured in Varrenes, Quebec and transported by train to Revelstoke. A 143-foot suspension trailer was used to transport the transformers down Westside Road to the Revelstoke Generating Station. Once in place, the transformers will transfer the additional energy supplied by the fifth generating unit currently being installed.

"The Revelstoke Unit 5 Project is the largest capital project BC Hydro has undertaken since construction of the Revelstoke Generating Station in 1984," said Walker-Larsen. "BC Hydro is looking forward to the successful completion of this three-year project."

The target in-service date for the project is October, 2010. The new generating unit will provide approximately 500 megawatts of additional dependable capacity to the Revelstoke Generating Station. This will bring the facility's overall capacity to 2,480 megawatts. The new capacity will allow BC Hydro to serve the needs of an additional 40,000 homes at peak demand.

BC Hydro has also proposed the installation of two new generating units at Mica Generating Station. This project is currently under environmental review by the provincial Environmental Assessment Office.
