Major B.C. retailer switches exclusively to energy efficient light fixtures

VANCOUVER – London Drugs has announced that it will sell only energy efficient lighting fixtures at all 50 of its B.C. stores – making it the first retail chain in the entire country to make the switch.

The company has shifted its lighting inventory to include only ENERGY STAR-qualified lighting fixtures.

"I congratulate London Drugs on leading the country in the area of energy efficient lighting," said Lisa Coltart, executive director of Power Smart and Customer Care for BC Hydro. "London Drugs is a committed Power Smart retail partner and has been working with us for numerous years to advance energy efficient products in B.C."

London Drugs worked with Globe Electric – its lighting vendor – and BC Hydro to select an ENERGY STAR-qualified product assortment. BC Hydro has also provided educational material and support for in-store customer events and staff training.

"London Drugs is proud to offer our customers a variety of energy efficient products at competitive prices," said Clint Mahlman, London Drugs senior vice-president. "In addition to offering energy efficient products, London Drugs is Canada's only retailer who offers a bring-back-the-pack program allowing all product packaging to be recycled through the customer service desk. Thanks to our comprehensive recycling program London Drugs has reduced waste by at least 60 per cent chain-wide."

In 2009, London Drugs won a Power Smart Excellence Award for Retailer of the Year for its work with BC Hydro to promote energy efficient products.
