BC Hydro supports Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

Posted by Sally Masters

This year, BC Hydro made its 12th annual contribution to Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA), an important local initiative in the Creston Valley.

This year’s contribution was $380,310. The work undertaken by the CVWMA supports BC Hydro’s long-term environmental goals and aligns with the province's Clean Energy Act which supports environmental stewardship in our province.

The CVWMA is recognized as a wetland of international importance as it plays a critical role in maintaining the global environment. CVWMA is home and year around sanctuary to over 265 bird species, 50 mammal species, 30 fish, reptile and amphibian species, thousands of invertebrate and plant species.

The valley is a migration corridor for tundra swans, greater white-fronted geese, and other waterfowl, and is the largest regional locale for wintering birds of prey in the interior of the province. It is considered second only to the coast as a flyway route for numbers of migrating waterfowl that follow it twice yearly.

Currently the area is welcoming wintering birds such as northern shrikes and rough-legged hawks. Others include owls such as northern pygmy-owl and great horned owl. Tundra swans may also be seen throughout the winter months.
