Hazardous wastes are materials with hazardous properties that are no longer suitable for their original use. By law, they require special documentation, handling, storage, shipping, and treatment prior to reuse, recycling or disposal. Amounts shipped serve as a proxy for amounts generated.

Liquids shipped decreased from fiscal 2010 mainly due to decreased shipments of oil to the Oil Management Department.

Solids shipped increased over last year in large part because of the disposal of PCB wastes. There were some historical PCB cable that were disposed of this year that account for the large portion of this increase. There were also smaller increases in the disposal of asbestos and lead acid batteries.

Yearly variations in amounts shipped are also due to on-site accumulations and non-routine shipping by facilities. Amounts shown may under-report total amounts due to some direct shipping by individual facilities that were not tallied.
