Big Bend Substation

What's new

Big Bend substation is now in-service.

The Big Bend area of south Burnaby is a large, growing industrial area where the demand for electricity is expected to increase by 20% over the next 10 years. The Big Bend Substation was constructed to provide an increased supply of clean, reliable electricity to the area.

The project involved building a new substation and connecting it to the existing transmission and distribution systems.

Big Bend Substation includes:

  • Two enclosed buildings.
  • Outdoor equipment.

In Big Bend – a major commercial, business, and light industrial hub in south east Burnaby – demand for electricity is expected to increase by 20% over the next 10 years.

We have built a new substation to meet the growing needs of our Big Bend customers.

This project launched in March 2014, and the substation construction was completed and in service March 2017.

The Big Bend Substation property is bordered by Byrne Creek to the east and Gray Creek to the north.

Appropriate setbacks from these fish-bearing streams were followed in siting the substation, and during all construction activities.

Further protection to the creeks was provided through adherence to environmental management and protection plans, and the oversight provided by environmental monitors to ensure that workers abided by these plans.

The substation is equipped with state of the art containment to prevent any risk of fluid spills into the watershed.
