Earn rewards when enrolling your smart device

Enroll your smart home devices in Peak Saver to allow us to adjust them remotely during times of high electricity demand.

You’ll earn an enrollment bonus up to $500, plus ongoing seasonal rewards. Seasonal rewards are $50 per device type for most devices, $250 for batteries.

Participating also helps us manage demand to ensure safe, reliable electricity across the province, making it a win-win for you and your community.

How it works

We'll hold peak events throughout the year, during which we'll remotely adjust your enrolled smart devices. You won’t need to do anything, since we’ll take care of delaying your electric vehicle (EV) charging or adjusting your smart thermostat by a couple of degrees. Events are intended to be seamless, and most customers don't even notice them.

Each event will last no more than four hours, after which your devices resume normal operation.

You can opt out of an event at any time, and you'll maintain full override control of your enrolled devices. However, if you opt out of more than 50% of events in a season, you may not be eligible for the seasonal reward.

Enrollment bonus per household

A one-time enrollment bonus is available per device type. You’ll receive this as a bill credit on your next bill after we’ve processed your device enrollment.

Peak events can happen any time of the day, but most common during high demands on our system. Each event will last no more than four hours. After an event ends, your device will return to its normal operation.

You don't need to take any action during an event. Your enrolled device(s) will respond to the signal we send them to automatically adjust their operation.

  • EV chargers will stop charging or charge at a lower rate.
  • Load controllers will safely shut off the water heater for the duration of the event.
  • In heating season, Mysa thermostats will set back the temperature by up to three degrees. Eco Sinopé users can set their own temperature set-back preferences.
  • Home batteries will discharge to power your home circuits. Your batteries will never discharge below 20% to ensure there is some energy left.
  • For direct-to-EV charging control, your EV will stop charging, or charge at a lower rate, based on your own charging settings.

After the event, your devices will return to their normal operation and settings to recharge if required.

Most devices will have a "demand response" or "DR" indicator on their screen or in their app. You may receive a notification from your EV charger indicating that charging has been paused.

You can opt out by simply adjusting the settings of your device. You’re always in control.

If you opt out of more that 50% of the events throughout the season, you may not be eligible for the seasonal reward.

If you’re eligible for an enrollment bonus, it will be applied to your next BC Hydro bill after we’ve processed your enrollment.

If you're eligible for a seasonal reward, it will be applied to your BC Hydro bill at the end of the season.

Seasonal reward payouts take place during the following periods:

  • Summer season payments: October to December
  • Winter season payments: April to June

We're continuing to explore opportunities to add more eligible devices. For devices to work with our program, they must control electric-powered devices (i.e. no gas furnaces or appliances), and must be able to receive a signal via the internet so they can be controlled remotely.

We offer Peak Saver during two seasons: winter and summer.

  • Winter season: November through March.
  • Summer season: June through September.
