Peak Rewards program – EV smart charging & home energy control trials

ev home charging and smart home controls

Registration is now closed

The Peak Rewards program explores ways to reduce the electrical load on our system during peak times of the day. The trial is now closed. If you're interested in participating in future energy trials, fill out this form.

Note: The Peak Rewards program has been delayed until further notice due to COVID-19.

How the trial works

Just like when cars are bumper-to-bumper on the highway during a rush hour commute to work, our electric system experiences peak times as well. These peak times often occur on cold winter nights when everyone turns on their heat, or on hot summer days when air conditioning peaks. With your help, we're hoping to reduce electricity usage during these peak periods.

During the trial seasons, we'll remotely control your FLO electric vehicle charger or remotely control your Sinopé devices during select peak time events. Peak times will last for no more than four consecutive hours. You may opt-out at any time during the event. You have full override control at all times for any devices you elect for the trials. At the end of each trial season, you'll receive $50 just for participating.

Trial seasons are:

  • Summer season – from May 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020
  • Winter season – from October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021

What to expect during a peak time event

FLO Home electric vehicle (EV) smart charging

When we control your electric vehicle charger, we may do one of the following:

  • Charge the vehicle at a slower/lower rate (e.g. at 5kw instead of 10kw)
  • Delay charging (e.g. setting a timer)
  • Adjust the vehicle's charging to optimize demand on the electrical grid while still meeting your charging needs

You can opt out at any time, without penalty.

A peak time event may occur from 6 a.m. to 12 noon and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., during the trial season.

Sinopé smart home energy control devices

When we control your Sinopé thermostats, we may reduce your set point temperature between 1 to 3 degrees.

The Sinopé water heater controller will shut off the water heater. Your water tank will still have hot water inside for you to use while it has been turned off.

You can opt out of any control event, anytime, without penalty.

A peak time event may occur from 6 a.m. to 12 noon and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., during the trial season.

Earn up to $250 for participating

If you're accepted into all the trials, you could receive up to $250 per year for participating in the program as follows:

  • Receive a $50 reward per season for your electric vehicle smart charger, for a total of $100 per year
  • Receive a $50 reward per season for your Sinopé water heat controller for a total of $100 per year
  • Receive a $50 reward in total for all eligible Sinopé thermostats in the residence for the winter season only

You'll receive your $50 reward at the end of each season.
