The following types of homes are not eligible for this offer:

  • Single-family homes (detached dwelling) and secondary suites in a single-family home (detached dwelling).
  • Mobile homes.
  • Duplex, triplex, row home or side-by-side townhomes.
  • Multiplex with up to five units.

  • The new heat pump water heater must:
    • Replace an existing hard-wired electric resistance hot water heater.
    • Have electric back-up or supplemental electric heating, if applicable.
    • Be installed with appropriate venting as not to create unwanted cold spots.

The new water heater must be listed in Tier 2 or higher on the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA)’s Advanced Water Heater Specification Qualified Products List [PDF, 675 KB] for residential heat pump water heaters.

  • All upgrades must be installed by a licensed contractor with a GST number and a valid B.C. business license for the trade applicable to the upgrade being installed. Self-installations are not eligible.
  • Emergency replacement of broken electric heat pump water heater or existing electric heat pump water heater is not eligible.

How it works

  1. Review the eligibility criteria to ensure you and your project will qualify.
  2. Work with your contractor to get a quote for a heat pump water heater product and installation that would meet the eligibility requirements. We recommend getting at least three quotes.
  3. Get approval from your strata or equity co-op board for the project. This isn’t applicable to market rental suite owners.
  4. Once you’re ready to move forward, start your application by requesting a pre-approval code online. You should hear back within about five business days.
  5. Proceed with your water heater installation and pay your contractor.
  6. Come back and submit your rebate application online within six months of pre-approval. You’ll need your pre-approval code and the required documents.

Request a pre-approval code

To take part in this program, you’ll need to receive pre-approval before starting your project. The pre-approval process checks that you meet the general eligibility criteria and secures the portion of rebate funding for you for a limited time.

Request pre-approval once you have a quote and approval from your strata or equity co-op board.

Pre-approval codes are valid for six months. If you haven’t applied for a rebate within that period, the code becomes invalid, and you can request a new one.

Returning customers: Complete your application

After your heat pump water heater is installed and you’ve paid your contractor, come back and submit your rebate application. You need to apply within six months of receiving the pre-approval code.
