SO5 Public Policy Development and Lobbying

As a Crown corporation, BC Hydro is accountable to our Shareholder, the Government of British Columbia, through the Ministry of Energy and Mines. BC Hydro receives policy guidance from the Government through three essential ways: legislation, policy and instructions. BC Hydro does not engage in lobbying.

BC Hydro actively engages in stakeholder processes initiated by both the provincial and federal governments to obtain input on the renewal or emergence of environmental policy and legislation, such as the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act, the Low Carbon Fuel Requirements Act, Zero Net Deforestation, Water Act Modernization, and Species at Risk. The intent is to understand the potential implications upon BC Hydro operations and programs, and where appropriate, advance understanding of opportunities and challenges with achieving compliance.

BC Hydro in 2011 has actively engaged in stakeholder processes related to:

• Low Carbon Fuel Requirements Regulation (Provincial)
• Zero Net Deforestation Policy (Provincial)
• Water Act Modernization (Provincial)
• Environmental and Offset Mitigation Policy (Provincial)
• Species at Risk Act Statutory Five Year Review (Federal)
