BC Hydro brings additional resources to help restore power on Vancouver Island

VANCOUVER: BC Hydro is bringing more crews and equipment from the Lower Mainland to help restore electricity service for customers on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands who lost power during Wednesday’s wind storm.

Crews worked through the night to restore power to more than 167,000 customers in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. Wednesday’s severe wind brought down trees and damaged BC Hydro infrastructure in many communities.

There are still nearly 17,000 customers without power in Victoria, Nanaimo, Duncan and the Gulf Islands. While additional resources are being brought in, some customers may be without power for another night and potentially longer in some cases.

BC Hydro appreciates its customers’ patience as repair work continues and will provide updated estimates for power restoration as they become available at bchydro.com/outages.

May 18, 2022

VANCOUVER: BC Hydro crews have worked to restore electricity service to more than 67,000 customers in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast who lost power during Wednesday’s wind storm. The hardest hit communities include Nanaimo, Duncan, Qualicum Beach and Galiano Island.

All available resources will continue to work throughout the night to safely restore power. Some customers on the Gulf Islands, and in Duncan, Qualicum Beach and Parksville may be without power overnight.

Wednesday’s storm brought heavy rains and strong winds to the region and left 121,000 customers without power. Many of the outages were caused by trees making contact with power lines. A downed power line is considered an emergency situation and members of the public should stay at least 10 metres back and call 911 immediately.

BC Hydro appreciates its customers’ patience as repair work continues and will provide updated estimates for power restoration as they become available at bchydro.com/outages.
