Community ReGreening program

Tree-lined pathway through a park with houses on the right and large green space on the left.

Funding for community planting projects

Our Community ReGreening program supports the planting of trees and other vegetation that help enhance ecological networks across the province. The program also helps to ensure the right trees are planted near our power lines [PDF, 4.6 MB].

Our ReGreening grants fund small-scale community planting projects and are open to all municipal governments and Indigenous Governing Bodies within BC Hydro's service area [PDF, 181 KB].

The application intake is now open from November 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026. All applicants will be advised of their application status in April 2026.

What are the benefits of ReGreening?

We fund planting projects to help:

  • Diversify and enhance urban forests
  • Enhance open space
  • Beautify parks and outdoor recreation areas
  • Bring the community together to create natural habitats and support environmental stewardship action
  • Support Indigenous cultural practices
  • Promote water conservation landscaping

About the program

We provide financial support up to $10,000 per applicant to purchase trees and other vegetation for small-scale community planting projects.

We help fund the purchase of plants and shipping costs where appropriate. Applicants are responsible for labour and ongoing maintenance of their project. Grant funding is disbursed to the applicant after the successful completion of the project and the final report is approved.

Our program funds a wide variety of projects:

  • Urban and community trees and shrubs
    • Street or park trees that are carefully selected and placed to avoid interference with electrical infrastructure
    • Projects that enhance urban green spaces, provide shade, improve air quality, and foster community well-being
  • Habitat restoration and enhancement
    • Native trees, shrubs, and groundcover that support wildlife and biodiversity
    • Projects that restore degraded habitats or enhance existing ones to support birds, mammals, amphibians, and other native species
  • Pollinator gardens
    • Flowering plants and shrubs that provide nectar and habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators
    • Gardens designed with seasonal blooms to help pollinators year-round
  • Indigenous-determined culturally significant vegetation
    • Plants with cultural, spiritual, or traditional importance to Indigenous Nations
    • Species chosen by the applying Nation, as long as the mature plant height complies with safety requirements [PDF, 4.6 MB] near power lines
  • Wetland restoration
    • Projects that restore or create wetland ecosystems, improving water quality, flood control, and habitat for aquatic and semi-aquatic species
    • May include planting native wetland vegetation, or removing invasive species.

We can't accept applications for projects that:

  • Are outside BC Hydro's service area [PDF, 181 KB]
  • Are already underway
  • Benefit a private individual, industry, or private organization
  • Are planted on private land
  • Purchase of trees and other vegetation
  • Shipping costs, in some cases, where appropriate
  • Supplies including mulch, stakes, and water bags (up to a maximum of 15% of project costs)

Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • The type of vegetation and overall landscaping plan
  • Project profile, visibility, and community support
  • Benefits such as recreation, wildlife habitat restoration or beautification
  • Overall site and implementation plan or land dedicationSustainability and ongoing maintenance of vegetation
  • Other funding and community partners involved
  • Preference will be given to trees and vegetation that are native to B.C.

Important: If planting near power lines, preference will be given to plant species native to B.C. that meet our height and distance restrictions [PDF, 4.6 MB].
