BC Hydro maintains collective agreements with unionized employees through IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) and COPE (Canadian Office and Pofessional Employees Union). M&P (Management & Professional) staff are not covered under collective agreements. The above data is the number of full-time regular, part-time regular, full-time temporary and part-time temporary employees in each affiliation in BC Hydro, Powerex and Powertech as at March 31, 2011 according to Pay and HR data.
Like most organizations, BC Hydro supplements its core employee workforce with consultants and contractors. Consultants are primarily involved in the support and provision of specialized expertise to major projects and initiatives and at any given time can equate to five to 10 per cent of BC Hydro's workforce. Contractors and subcontractors are usually defined as skilled trades workers that support BC Hydro's core operations in maintaining, sustaining and restoring its generation and distribution services and like Consultants, may at any given time may equate to five to 10 per cent of the BC Hydro's workforce.
In addition, in 2003, BC Hydro outsourced a number of its "back office" support service functions and transferred approximately 1,600 employees to Accenture Business Services for Utilities.
