Burrard Generating Station (BGS) uses fresh water from Buntzen Lake for process and cooling water. BGS uses salt water from Burrard Inlet for cooling water. Numerous studies have been completed on the effects of cooling water on Burrard Inlet and no significant environmental impacts were found. Fresh water and salt water discharge parameters are regulated by permit from the Ministry of Environment.
Fort Nelson Generating Station (FNG) uses fresh water from the Fort Nelson River for process water. The water is provided through Spectra, the natural gas processing facility adjacent to the plant, effluent is returned to Spectra and processed in their effluent treatment system prior to discharge to the Fort Nelson River. Spectra effluent discharge is regulated by permit from the Ministry of Environment. The volume of water used by FNG is relatively small compared to the volume that Spectra uses.
FNG usage is estimated for fiscals 2010 and 2011 based on approximate usage per hour and operating days. The actual data is not available.
Prince Rupert Generating Station (RPG) uses fresh water from the adjacent penstock, that formerly supplied the pulp mill, for fire water. The volume is very small and there would not be any significant impact for this water usage, therefore is noted as NA (not available) in the table above.
