BC Hydro issues statement on contractor accident

Statement from Greg Reimer, Executive Vice-President of Transmission & Distribution, BC Hydro

"A journeyman lineman with McGregor Construction died on Saturday, March 15 near Terrace, B.C., while working on the Northwest Transmission Line. The employee sustained an injury while working on a transmission tower and later died from that injury.

McGregor has been contracted by Valard and Burns & McDonald – the design-build contractor for the transmission line – to work on the line.

I am very saddened by the passing of this employee. On behalf of everyone at BC Hydro, I offer my sincerest condolences to the employee's family and co-workers. BC Hydro will work with the contractor to cooperate fully with investigation by WorkSafeBC and we will continue to offer any other support and assistance we can to the contractor and their employees.

Although there was no immediate danger to any other crews on-site, construction on the line was stopped immediately out of respect for the employee."

Background

The Northwest Transmission line is a new 344-kilometre, 287-kilovolt transmission line being built between Skeena substation near Terrace and a new substation near Bob Quinn Lake.
