Vehicle Tradesperson (Truck & Transport Mechanic)
Learn to maintain, inspect, repair, and modify BC Hydro vehicles
As a truck and transport mechanic (vehicle tradesperson) at BC Hydro, you maintain, inspect, diagnose, repair, modify and outfit BC Hydro vehicles.
The BC Hydro fleet consists of 3,000 vehicles including passenger vehicles (e.g. cars, SUVs, passenger vans), light vehicles (e.g. pick-up trucks, commercial vans, flat deck trucks), heavy vehicles e.g. man lifts, digger derricks, crane trucks), mobile machines (e.g. fork lifts, self-propelled man lifts) and trailers (e.g. pole trailers, reel trailers, utility trailers).
What you learn and experience
- How to perform regular maintenance inspection to meet regulatory requirements and internal protocols
- How to repair problems and deficiencies identified in inspections
- How to diagnose and repair failures that cause breakdowns, on trucks, pickup trucks, vans, forklifts, man lifts, pole trailers, utility trailers, tractor trailers and other vehicles
- How to thoroughly overhaul heavy equipment
- How to outfit new vehicles and make them ready for the fleet
- How to handle large, bulky and often heavy materials or equipment
Qualifications: what you bring
- You're a high school graduate with English 12, Math 11 and Science 11 or the equivalent, or you have written and passed a college-based entry level trades training program entrance examination.
- You’ve successfully completed an approved Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport entry level trades training / foundation program.
- You have a Class 5 driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class 3 upon hire.
- You enjoy doing hands-on, physical work outdoors and have the fitness and upper body. strength to do this.
- You have only 2 years of experience in the trade with work performed on heavy vehicles equipped with aerial devices, digger derricks, stiff cranes and folding cranes mounted
- You have normal colour vision
- You have strong interpersonal skills and are able to deal with both internal and external customers.
- You have a mechanical aptitude, and familiarity with computers, industrial tools, and equipment, would be an asset.
Equivalence documentation and transcripts
To successfully claim an equivalent status, you must provide documentation that effectively demonstrates you've taken equivalent courses. You'll submit either a letter from your place of education or your instructor indicating the course(s), stating that the course(s) taken would be considered equivalent to or better than a grade 11 or 12 level.
Once selected as an apprentice, you need to provide a copy of transcripts demonstrating your high school graduation including Math 11, English 12 and Science 11 as well as a driver's abstract and claims history
Program details and future job prospects
As a successful apprentice applicant, your career in the trade begins with 48 months of on the job and 6 weeks per year of in classroom training.

Where you train and work
During your apprenticeship, you'll be assigned to a fleet headquarters in BC. You may be asked to report to alternate headquarters across the province for limited periods of time during your apprenticeship for rotations. As an apprentice, you must be prepared to move from location to location within the province as required by the program.
Pay and benefits
As an apprentice, you earn 75% of the full journeyperson trade rate while you learn, with further increases during the apprenticeship.
