Accessing Your Meter

Accessing Your Meter

If your meter is not accessible due to locked gates, an indoor location of the meter or family pets, here are several ways to provide access.

Customer Key on File

You give us a key, which is filed by a number and securely kept at our BC Hydro office. On the specific reading day, the meter reader takes that key to access your meter. Only authorized BC Hydro employees have access to these keys.

Key Vault/Lock Box

BC Hydro will install a key vault at your premises, which holds your access key. Key vaults or lock boxes are usually used by commercial or multi-residential buildings; however, key vaults can be installed at a private residence. Only authorized BC Hydro personnel have access to the key vaults.

Access Codes

Many meters are located behind a locked gate or in a garage. For these accounts customers may provide the garage or gate access codes if they are available. The access codes are only available to authorized BC Hydro personnel.

Customer Readings

Some customers read their own meters by completing a Request for Meter Reading [PDF, 66 Kb] and phoning the meter reading in to BC Hydro. To verify accuracy, a BC Hydro meter reader must conduct a visual reading on a regular basis.
