Green Independent Power Producers

Green energy development and investment are key to achieving our goals of becoming a leading sustainable energy company. Green energy complements our generation portfolio, helps limit our greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the intensity of natural gas-fired electricity generation and stimulates the renewable energy industry in B.C.

BC Hydro has made a voluntary commitment to meet at least 10 per cent of new electricity demand through green energy to 2010. We are also acquiring green energy to meet other obligations, such as those arising from sales of Green Power Certificates both in B.C. and in the electricity marketplace. One way in which we are meeting these commitments is by purchasing electricity from independent power producers (IPPs) whose projects meet designated low-impact and social green criteria.

As a result of our previous (2000/01) request for project proposals, Hydro has signed electricity purchase agreements with a number of qualifying IPPs.

We have now announced our 2002/03 Green Power Generation process. We are seeking 10- to 20-year agreements to supply new, competitively priced green power generation to help meet future load growth and other commitments and to take advantage of opportunities relating to green power.
