Customer Generation

Our Customer-Based Generation program is another innovative strategy to secure competitively priced electricity and help meet future load growth.

BC Hydro is seeking long-term contracts for 800 gigawatt-hours (GWh/yr) of installed and operating generation at existing BC Hydro industrial and commercial customers’ sites. BC Hydro hopes to have the first of these new projects on line and providing electricity to help meet the province’s growing electricity needs by November 2005.

BC Hydro expects to acquire this electricity through a competitive process, subject to a ceiling price of $49 per megawatt hour (MWh) for delivery to the Lower Mainland. BC Hydro will pay the generator a price that varies depending on customer site location, greenhouse gas impacts and whether or not the energy is green. Electricity purchase agreements will be 10-20 years in length.

Customer-Based Generation has the potential to generate revenue for our customers while making use of existing infrastructure, making it a cost-effective way to produce additional power for B.C.

More details about the program are available on the Customer Generation section of our web site.
