As our population and economy grows, so does our demand for energy. For years, we have been using more electricity than we produce in B.C.

The B.C. government's Energy Plan has set two ambitious goals:

Achieving electricity self-sufficiency by 2016
Offsetting 50% of new electricity needs through conservation by 2020

The vision of the Smart Metering & Infrastructure (SMI) Program is to take the first, fundamental step in educating and making customers aware of their electricity use. The overall goal is to make information and tools available for people to manage their energy consumption and encourage people to use less energy... and using less is better for everyone.


Save energy & money The right information at the right time to encourage conservation and help customers manage their own electricity use and save money.		Rate options that promote conservation Customized solutions for customers and conservation packages to help customers save money.


Fewer outages, faster restoration Faster outage detection and the ability to confirm that an individual customer has been restored will help to shorten outage restoration times.		Maintaining competitive rates BC Hydro will maintain its competitive rate advantage through theft reduction, self generation options and other initiatives.
