Lions Gate Bridge at nightA plan to meet B.C.'s future electricity needs

BC Hydro forecasts that the province's electricity needs will grow by 20 to 40 per cent over the next 20 years.

As extensive as BC Hydro's assets are, they will not be enough to provide future generations of British Columbians with electricity self-sufficiency if demand continues to grow as projected. BC Hydro is planning now so that British Columbians will continue to enjoy the benefits of a secure, reliable and affordable electricity supply.

To meet B.C.'s future electricity needs, there is a need to:

  • Conserve more electricity;
  • Buy more electricity from renewable power projects, such as wind and run-of-river hydro;
  • Build more by reinvesting in existing assets and considering new resources, such as the Peace River Site C Hydro Project.
