Electricity demand is growing

Like many regions in British Columbia, the Columbia Valley's demand for electricity is growing. The existing system has reached its capacity – it's not uncommon for the communities between Invermere and Golden to experience power outages.

Construction is underway for the Columbia Valley Transmission Project

This project is the most significant investment that BC Hydro has made in the upper Columbia Valley's electrical system in almost 50 years. It will increase reliability of the electrical supply in communities from Invermere to Field and meet the area's growing demand for power.

What's being done

This project has three main components which include: building a new substation, building a new 230kV transmission line, and a new 69kV transmission line.

Construction Schedule

The expected in-service date for the Project is October 2012.

Public Consultation

Public consultation began over two years ago, and information has been sent to more than 8,000 residences and businesses.

There are two main general contractors for construction – one each for the substation work and the transmission line work.

What's being done

Building a new substation, Kicking Horse Substation, near Golden. Connecting Kicking Horse Substation to Invermere Substation with a new transmission line and also to Golden Substation with a new transmission line.

Benefits

To date, the project has provided $17 million worth of employment opportunities in the local community.
