Inland Kenworth
The Story
Inland Kenworth Ltd., a dealer of farm machinery, trucks and construction equipment, discovered the value of installing energy-efficient lighting when the company participated in a pilot of the High-Performance Building Program for Small to Medium Commercial Buildings. Their design team created an energy-efficient lighting design for the firm's 33,000 square foot truck bay facility that utilizes a photocell in conjunction with metal halide dimming ballasts. These technologies automatically dim the lighting to take advantage of natural daylight.
The Results
Thanks to these features, as well as the use of T8 fluorescent lighting and occupancy sensors in office spaces, the design provides savings of 33,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year and meets ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2004 code. The project qualified for a program incentive of $4,600 that reduced the project payback from 8 to 3.5 years.
For Inland Kenworth, energy savings are just the beginning. The new lighting system provides brighter, more attractive light without shadows or glare. This provides much better visibility, reducing eyestrain and fatigue, saving time and leading to greater productivity.
“We now have a fully automatic system that provides optimal and consistent light levels, whatever the conditions. Employees really notice the difference and find the space much more comfortable to work in,” says Dick McConnachie, CEO.
